Why I Started A Blog

Laptop

I was sitting there contemplating today, why did i even start this stupid blog?  See, I have all of these thoughts constantly running through my mind, like 24/7.  I’m not sure it’s healthy, but I’m not sure I can help it either.  Occasionally these thoughts spill out in conversation or onto social media in the form of a joke or rant and then I find myself wondering how did I even come up with that garbage and why did I share it!  As I sat thinking for a few minutes about why I actually started this blog, several reasons quickly came to mind.  So I’m going to share those reasons with you all and maybe it will motivate you to start a blog or maybe it will motivate you to get back to your blog that you’ve been neglecting.

Why I Started A Blog

To Learn – I started a blog to learn more about specific subjects that are of interest to me.  This blog will serve as a motivator of sorts for me to research and study these areas of focus so that I can become more of an expert and less of an amateur.  Not only will I learn through research, but I’ll also learn along the way from readers like you that I interact with.

To Share – I started a blog to share some of the knowledge and experience that I’ve gained with others who are interested.  Some folks want to keep it a secret and hoard information once they get it, but I’d much rather share my insights and help others if I can.  I do admit I need to be more aggressive in reaching out to help others, but I’ve always been willing to help out anyone who is asking for help or anyone who wants to learn.  Sometimes I think my calling was to be a teacher, but I don’t know that I could tolerate the delusional parents and the classroom regulations imposed on teachers these days.

To Make Money – I started a blog to make money!  So far I have barely made enough money to buy myself a glass of bourbon, but it’s a work in progress.  Maybe my writing isn’t up to par yet, maybe my content isn’t good enough, or maybe I’m not using the right strategies to generate income.  Either way I’ll continue to work on this aspect of my blog in hopes that one day the blog will generate some extra income.

To Practice – I started a blog to practice web design and web development.  I have been doing web development for a living for almost 5 years now and admittedly I become complacent sometimes.  The web development world is constantly changing and evolving at an intense pace.  If you don’t keep up to date with your practices, skills, techniques, and the tools you use then you will quickly find yourself falling behind.  So by building this blog I am getting practice for my career while I’m not at work.

To Express My Thoughts – I started a blog as another way to express my thoughts.  The thoughts that make perfect sense in my mind don’t always translate into the words that I want them to when they come out of my mouth.  I’m sure that this happens to everyone to a certain extent, but I feel like it happens to me more than it should.  I feel that my thoughts are always better expressed through writing and the more often I write the better my thoughts start to become expressed in person.

If you have a blog, why did you start your blog?  Feel free to comment below.

I started my blog (this week, actually) because I wanted to condense everything into one place and be able to add something valuable to the discussion eventually. I love the sense of community among bloggers and the encouragement. I haven’t made enough for a single drop of bourbon! 😉

I appreciate the compliment Shereeta! Just keep improving your writing skills and content. Lately, I have been trying many different strategies and paying attention to what works and what doesn’t. Success doesn’t happen overnight!
